My Favorite Locations for Family Photos in Northwest Iowa

I hear so often from clients that they don’t know where to take family photos or don’t know any pretty locations in the area. For some this can be a big stressor when it comes to planning and scheduling their family session. Good news though friends, I’ve got lots of beautiful locations to share with you!

With family session season upon us, I thought it would be helpful to share a few of my favorite spots to photograph families in Northwest Iowa!

Heiman’s Pit

Located near the Hwy 75 & Hwy 10 corner just South of Sioux Center, this spot never fails me! During the summer months it’s full of golden light and vibrant colors while the Fall is equally as beautiful with rich tones and tall grasses. To top it off it has a beautiful pond as well, which allows for lots of variety for the shoot.

Dordt Prairie

This little prairie is a great option to shoot at any time of the day! There is always a great shaded spot as well as spots where golden light can leak through. Probably my favorite thing about the prairie is the stunning wildflowers that bloom during late Summer/early Fall! Located just South of Dordt College’s campus makes it easy to get to!

Puddle Jumper Pond

This little spot is in one of the most unexpected places! Right behind Orange City Area Health is this perfect field of tall grass, adorable wooded area and even a pond. The light here at sunset is as good as gets and it’s really a great location all year round!

My In-laws pond

Selfishly this might be my absolute favorite spot to shoot. My in-laws have a beautiful pond just outside of Hull. It’s surrounded by trees, tall grasses, a sand beach and gorgeous evergreen lined driveway. I love that I always have access to this spot and don’t have to worry about working around other people since it’s private property. It’s also just minutes from my studio which isn’t all bad either!

I hope this little list helps put your minds at ease when booking a family session! There are plenty of great spots in our area! If you aren’t sure where to take your photos, ask your photographer! They are bound to have a few favorite locations!
